PLAN WITH CONFIDENCE

A few details make a big difference.

Start with the topic that fits your next shipment.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

What makes a complete freight quote?

A clear shipment description helps your transportation team price the right service.

Read the quote guide
  • Locations: Full pickup and delivery addresses, ZIP codes, facility names, and all stops.
  • Timing: Ready date, dock hours, appointment requirements, and the required delivery date. Include time zones.
  • Freight: Commodity, piece or pallet count, packaged dimensions, total weight, and whether it can be stacked.
  • Handling: Dock or ground-level loading, forklift or crane availability, liftgate needs, tarping, and driver assistance.
  • Special requirements: Tell us about high-value cargo, temperature needs, hazardous materials, or cross-border requirements before booking.

For a recurring lane, include expected loads per week, seasonal peaks, and whether trailers can be dropped.

DOCK & YARD PLANNING

Could a drop trailer program fit?

Decouple loading time from the truck’s arrival when your operation supports it.

Read the drop trailer guide

A trailer can be placed at your facility for loading or unloading before a scheduled exchange. A pool supports a repeating cycle of empty, loading, loaded, and departing trailers.

  • Share your daily volume and how long each trailer normally stays on site.
  • Confirm yard space, trailer access, dock availability, and who can move trailers.
  • Plan how loaded trailers, seals, references, and release times will be communicated.
  • Discuss weekend activity, month-end surges, empty returns, and trailer inventory.

Pool size and pricing depend on the lane, trailer dwell, capacity, and operating plan. A drop trailer does not mean unlimited storage.

SPECIALIZED FREIGHT

Get machinery ready for a quote.

Accurate measurements and loading details help identify the right trailer.

Read the machinery guide
  • Measure the complete shipping configuration: length, width, height, and verified weight, including packaging and attachments.
  • Provide clear photos and a drawing when available. Identify anything that can be removed or lowered for transport.
  • Explain how the freight will be loaded and unloaded: driven on, crane, forklift, or another method.
  • Share site access restrictions, ground conditions, loading contacts, and receiving hours.
  • Identify manufacturer-designated lifting and securement points for review by the transportation team.

Trailer selection, routing, permits, and timing require shipment-specific review. Confirm the transportation plan before committing to a delivery schedule.

APPOINTMENTS & DELAYS

Keep pickup and delivery on track.

A requested appointment and a confirmed appointment are different milestones.

Read the appointment guide
  • Confirm the date, local time zone, appointment number, and facility contact at both ends.
  • Check whether the facility uses appointments, open windows, or first-come service.
  • Have freight, paperwork, dock space, and loading staff ready for the agreed arrival.
  • Notify SCF promptly about schedule changes or delays. Record arrival and departure times and the reason for any wait.

Detention is waiting time beyond agreed free time. Layover generally means a longer delay that holds the truck over. Free time, eligibility, and charges depend on the shipment’s written terms—confirm them before booking.

REFERENCE & PAPERWORK

BOL, freight bill, and POD explained.

Keep the right references together so everyone can identify the shipment.

Read the paperwork guide
BOL — Bill of lading
The shipping document identifying the freight, shipper, receiver, and shipment instructions. Check that it matches the freight being tendered.
FB # — Freight bill number
The Landstar shipment reference used by our team. Include it when asking for updates or sending paperwork.
POD — Proof of delivery
The delivery record, typically a signed delivery document. Keep a readable copy with the receiver’s acknowledgment and any recorded delivery exceptions.

Record visible shortages or damage accurately and contact SCF promptly. Send all relevant document pages and include the FB # in the subject line.

RECURRING & PEAK VOLUME

Plan ahead for month-end shipping.

Give your freight team an early view of the volume, then keep the plan current.

Read the peak shipping guide
  • Share a lane forecast with daily load counts, expected release times, and delivery requirements.
  • Flag orders that are firm versus estimates and identify the most time-sensitive freight.
  • Confirm extended dock hours, weekend loading, and receiver availability.
  • Discuss extra trailer needs early, including when empties should arrive and loaded trailers must leave.
  • Set one point of contact for changes and review the plan as orders become ready.

Early planning helps us evaluate capacity. A forecast alone does not reserve a truck; confirm each booking and any dedicated arrangement with SCF.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before the truck arrives.

Use the shipment checklist →
Do I need to know the trailer type before requesting a quote?

No. Send the commodity, packaged dimensions, weight, photos if helpful, and loading/unloading requirements. Our team can help evaluate the options.

Does sending a quote request book a shipment?

No. SCF reviews your information and discusses pricing, timing, and capacity. Your shipment must be confirmed with our team before it is considered booked.

Can I track my shipment online?

Use our tracking page or the link provided by our team. Customer portals show shipment details and available tracking links. Location availability depends on the shipment and tracking source. Try a sample portal.

What if the receiver has no dock?

Tell us before booking. We’ll review liftgate, forklift, crane, or other unloading arrangements based on the freight. Do not assume the driver will have the equipment or staff needed to unload.

What should I do when a shipment changes?

Contact SCF as soon as the weight, dimensions, stops, dates, or handling needs change. These changes can affect equipment, pricing, and availability.
